Sousel

Located north of Central Alentejo, in the municipality of Sousel, the landscape, essentially flat with some slight relief, is marked by cork oak forests, rainfed arable cultural systems and olive groves. Agriculture is the most significant sector, employing around half of the population. In gastronomy, the use of herbs and aromatic plants and bread give the dishes prepared a typically Alentejo identity. Gazpacho with oregano, chickpea stew with mint, "cachola" with cumin and "Açorda" with coriander are some of Sousel's specialties. Traditional sweets are strongly linked to festive seasons. The Annual São Miguel Fair, held for over 200 years in September, is the most prominent event in the municipality.
