Alcácer do Sal
Situated in the southern area of Setúbal's District and crossed by the Sado estuary, Alcácer do Sal is part of Alentejo Litoral subregion, included in the baixo Alentejo region. The layout of the urban grid, marked by the riverside axis with the narrow streets parallel to each other, the beauty associated with the estuary, the heritage and the typicality emblazoned on the white houses with blue ledges, give a peculiar appearance to the county. Traces found in the castle foundations date back to the late Neolithic human occupation. The Romans developed here an important commercial port, which prospered mainly with the production of salt and that has been one of the main wealth sources of the county. In addition to the navigability of the river, its military and commercial strategy was also favored due to the fact that here three of the main Lusitania roads intersect with each other. Pedro Nunes, mathematician, Ruy Coelho, musician, Francisco Soares Gentil, internationally renown doctor, and Bernardino Ribeiro, novelist and poet, constitute some of the emblematic figures of the municipality. On a gastronomic level there are numerous specialities from the Mediterranean trilogy that combine bread, oil and wine, and that are complemented with aromatic herbs, notably the eel and lamb stew, migas (dish made with leftover bread), rebolão potatoes with spare ribs, purslane soup, black bass, açordas (bread stews) and feijão adubado (kind of beans). In the wide range of conventual sweets, the most famous are the pinhoadas (pinion sweets), egg candies, honey cake, queijadas de requeijão (kind of small cheese sweets), salatinos, bolo real (cake made of eggs and almonds) and the bean and almond pastries. Not to be missed is the annually held Rice Festival in Comporta, which evokes the main activity of the parish.
