Vila Nova da Baronia
The town is very old and there are remains dating back to Roman times, such as the Roman bridge located less than 300 meters from the town. It had its first charter granted by the provincial of the order of Santa Trindade on August 18, 1280. There is no doubt that the settlement of the territory of this parish goes back to times not only prior to the 12th century, but which certainly dates back to pre-Roman times. Vila Nova da Baronia was initially called "Vila Nova de a par de Alvito" and then "Vila Nova de Alvito", changing, in 1708, to the current name of Vila Nova Da Baronia, as it belonged to the same donee Count and Baron of Alvito. It was elevated to the category of municipality in the same year, having been extinguished in 1836, passing to the current municipality of Alvito. The gastronomy in the parish of Vila Nova da Baronia is typically Alentejo and the main dishes (typical of Alentejo) served in the various restaurants are "Açorda" (or soup) of dogfish, Lamb stew, Alentejo-style pork, Migas, Pursley Soup, "Carrasquinhas", among others. But typical dishes of Portuguese cuisine are also prepared, such as Cozido à Portuguesa, Codfish, among others.
