Aguiar da Beira

Aguiar da Beira is part of the District of Guarda and part of the demarcated region of the Dão wines. Located 40 kilometers away from Viseu, this Council is composed of 13 parishes, most of them with rural characteristics, as it is possible to verify by looking at its landscape, and therefore being agriculture the main occupation of a large part of the population. There are several traces of the prehistory, as well as from the medieval times, being some these classified as national monument. Important moments in the history of Portugal are associated to this location : Master of Aviz had many supporters here and from this county many men went to the national armies; the French invasions left their tracks, it was the stage of liberal wars (1827) and of the famous Maria da Fonte revolt (1846). Aguiar da Beira is associated with the production of queijo da Serra. In their seasons, chestnuts and potatoes are also of bountiful harvest. The goat, the calf and the greaves are the most typical dishes, as well as the bacalhau à Ponte do Abade (codfish recipe), but the real welcome card are the queijadas (small sweets with cheese). From the hands of the municipality craftspeople come out clogs, basketry, palhoças, capes and bulrush half chaps, the typical garments of this region.
