Museu da Fundação da Casa de Mateus

Built in the 18th century, designed by Nicolau Nasoni, the House of Mateus is an ex-libris of the Portuguese baroque. The chapel was designed by the master José Álvaro Rego. Crestaed in 1970 by D. Francisco de Sousa Botelho de Albuquerque, its aims are the preservation of the House, the study of its archives, and the promotion of cultural, scientific and pedagogic activities. The activities of the Foundation are mainly related to literature and music. The gardens are extremely well preserved and possess a rare beauty. In the Museum, one can view 2000 parchments and royal letters, several objects connected to the House and to the family and a collection of silver church relics of the 18th century. In the other rooms, one can also view Portuguese, French and English furniture of the 17th and 18th centuries, silverware and tableware of the Companhia das Índias, among other objects.
