São Roque do Pico
The second municipality to be created on “Ilha Montanha”, São Roque received its charter in 1542 from the hands of D. João III. The constant natural phenomena and the low productivity of the territory are the genesis of immigration to other lands, namely North America. Those who chose to remain in this municipality on the north coast of Pico Island continued to work in agriculture or learned to work in the whaling industry. More recently, with the end of whaling, tourism began to emerge. São Roque deserves, however, an in-depth visit. The hotel offer, based on rural tourism houses, offers all the comfort and tranquility to relax. The beautiful natural landscapes, lagoons and viewpoints offer breathtaking “portraits”.
