Santiago do Cacém
Located in the subregion of Alentejo litoral, the municipality of Santiago do Cacém is holder of a great diversity and landscape richness which enables the development of various sports\/leisure activities. The Lagoa de Santo André, considered the biggest lagoon system of the Alentejo coast is the habitat of numerous species of fish and birds. The architectural and archaeological heritage, very expressive, too, is part of the numerous attractions that make up the municipal image. The Roman ruins of Miróbriga, considered one of the most important archaeological sites of the country, are testimony to the Roman presence at this location. The Agricultural Fair and the horse is considered one of the most important, not only for its antiquity (held since 1998), but also by the prominence given to the horse and Equestrian practices. The lamb stew, bread, gazpacho and the dishes made with eels, along with traditional sweets, make up the culinary wealth of Santiago do Cacém. Herdade do Cebolal produces red and white wines of excellent quality, produced from traditional varieties of region and partially fermented in new oak casks. Among the various personalities born in the municipality include Manuel da Fonseca, one of the greatest writers of the Portuguese neo-realism and António Chainho, named Ambassador of Portuguese guitar.
