Ponta Delgada is located in the extreme southwest of the island of São Miguel, also known as Green Island, a paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Its settlement began around 1439, after, according to some historians, have been discovered in 1427 by Diogo de Silves. Of the various natural wonders that exist in the municipality, be sure to know the sources of water, the craters of volcanoes and lagoons, with emphasis on the two Lagoas das Sete Cidades and the Piscinas Naturais de Mosteiros. In fact, on this island full of attractions, it becomes difficult to enumerate them: since its diverse fauna and lush flora, typical houses and windmills of Flemish origin, to regional products, such as the pineapple of São Miguel, the wine and liquor smelling pineapple and passion fruit. The craft of Ponta Delgada is known for the originality of its materials: teeth and Whale bones, fish scales, basalt stone, corn kernels and leaves of Ficus. Regarding the food, especially the stews of fish, the "arroz de lapas", the "torresmos de molho de fígado", the "caldo azedo", the "massa sovada" and the "bolos lêvedos". If you walk out of the County, be sure to try the famous "cozidos das Furnas", made taking advantage of the heat of the Earth, in the municipality of Povoação. Completing the tourist offer of the island, there are companies that organize and promote the most varied sports and/or occupation of leisure: Golf, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, paintball, rappelling, climbing, diving, horseback riding, fishing and observation of dolphins and other cetaceans.
