Óbidos
Óbidos is a Portuguese medieval village par excellence. Who enters in its walls is immediately sent on a trip back in time to the era of the knights, battles, kings and queens. Along its narrow and almost exclusively pedestrian streets there are visible marks of time, featuring monuments with Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance characteristics. After passing through the gates of the village, walk through the typical streets, the whitewashed houses with flowers on the balconies and windows. Here you will find a huge variety of craft, clothing and souvenir shops. Moving forward, pass through the Padrão Camoniano, Pelourinho, Igreja de Santa Maria, Igreja da Misericórdia and the famous Castelo de Óbidos. Outside the walls, you will find the Câmara Municipal (City Hall) building, the Óbidos and Usseira aqueducts and, five kilometres from the village, the Lagoa de Óbidos. In this six kilometers long and 2.5 kilometers wide lagoon, you can practice sailing, rowing and windsurfing. Óbidos offers a wide variety of hotels, rural houses, restaurants and typical bars, ready to receive tourists. In the restaurants taste some of the specialties: eels and cockles of Lagoa de Óbidos, cabrito no forno (lamb in the oven), coelho guisado com arroz (rabbit stew with rice) and several caldeiradas (typical Portuguese stews). In the bars, enjoy the rustic and beautifully decorated spaces while tasting the famous Ginjinha de Óbidos served in a chocolate cup. This village has two large festivities every year, the Mercado Medieval (Medieval Market), which takes place in July and aims to recreate in detail the environment and the day-to-day life of a medieval village; and the Festival do Chocolate (Chocolate Festival), held in February, with various activities and contests around chocolate. All good reasons for a visit to this beautiful village.
