Mourão
Located on the left bank of the Guadiana, Mourão's main economic activities are agriculture, livestock, small commerce and tourism. The construction of the Alqueva dam changed the landscape. The most expressive icon of this change is Aldeia da Luz, the new one, since the old one was submerged. Even so, extensive areas of cereal cultivation, olive groves and vineyards are uncovered. The cuisine is characterized by strong flavors, not only from aromatic herbs, but also from sausages and artisanal cheeses. Sweets often use eggs, almonds and honey; many are of conventual origin and continue to be the region's calling card.
