Lamego
Integrated in the Demarcated Douro Region, Lamego essentially lives of agriculture, in particular of the good local wine, fruits and cereals, and industry, with emphasis on the production of furniture. Due to the popularity of the so-called agro-tourism and nature tourism, this sector is growing in the council together with the arising of luxury hotel units. The origins of the village are lost in time. It is known, however, that a half-fortified fort existed at the place where the castle is today. It was successively occupied by various peoples, including the Romans, until it was definitely reconquered from the Moors by Fernando Magno de Leão in 1057. In 1835 it was declared district headquarter and, in the same year, this designation was passed to Viseu, because it is a more central city. The gastronomy of Lamego has a secular tradition with recipes that have been passing from generation to generation: coelho assado no forno (roast rabbit), cabrito com batatas assadas (kid with roasted potatoes), trutas de escabeche (fried trouts with a vinegar sauce), milhos com carne de vinha d´alhos (pork loin dish made with a special white wine and garlic sauce, and served with potatoes and bread slices soaked in the sauce), bola de presunto (kind of bread with ham), enchidos (sausages) and, for dessert, peixinhos de chila (pumpkin jam sweets), pastéis Lamegos (typical almond pies), doces de ovos (egg mousse) and pão-de-ló (kind of sponge cake).
