Freixo de Espada à Cinta
Situated at the southern end of Bragança district, the municipality of Freixo de Espada à Cinta borders Spain and is located in the heart of the Natural Park of Douro Internacional. It is bathed by the Douro river, flanked by the largest Lodões stain (Celcis australis) in Europe and is home to a number of rare bird species, of which the protected black stork stands out. The Douro river imposes its presence and it becomes hard to resist to take a walk on a boat, from the river beach of Cogida up until Spain. The historical origins of Freixo de Espada à Cinta can be older than the foundation of nationality, since there is a reference to its castle in the charter of 1155/1157 by D. Afonso Henriques. At the beginning of the 16th century, the village was a powerful medieval war area with a castle that owned three powerful master towers, of which a colossal granite heptagonal tower, the Torre do Galo, remained up to our days. It is the most "manueline" town of Portugal, presenting, despite its distance from the sea, numerous Manueline doorways and windows with motifs depicting the Discoveries and thereby demonstrating its prosperity during the reign of D. Manuel. The best example of this style is the Igreja Matriz (mother church), from the early 16th century. Also the famous rock engraving "Cavalo de Mazouco", attributed to the Upper Paleolithic, is important to mention. Worth highlighting is also the house where the poet Guerra Junqueiro and the unprecedented country's traditional art were born: the silkworm rearing and the handmade processes for silk extraction, from which the most beautiful quilts, pillows and cloths are obtained.
