On the extreme north of Portugal, between the Cávado and Homem rivers valleys, in the Peneda-Gerês National Park, one finds the Gerês mountain that is 35 km long, 18 km wide, and reaches an altitude of 1507 metres. It is a water filled area and the richest mountain in the country, both in its flora and in its fauna. Of granitical nature, the mountain composes huge amphitheatres and incomparable sceneries. It also has cultural points of interest, namely due to its pre-historic vestiges.

The Cruz Alta (High Cross), at an altitude of 547 metres, is the highest pont of the Buçaco Mountain. The landscape is amazing, with views from the Boa Viagem Hill, at Figueira da Foz, to the Aveiro tidal stream. At this spot, surrounded by 5750 metres long and thre metres tall walls, one finds the Buçaco Woods.

This hill belongs to the Old Massif and is placed between the Larouco, Cabreira and Marão mountains. To the north, the hill separates the basins of the Cávado and Tâmega rivers. It is also known by the name of Serra as Alturas (Hill of the Heights), it is 8 km long and it is located on the northwest of the Trás-os-Montes region. The Carvalhelhos springs are located there.

There are also many historical vestiges from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. It is the highest massif to the south of the Tagus river, with an area of 31750 hectares.

Also called Santa Luzia hill, it is located by th city of Viana do Castelo. From the belvedere, 249 metres high, one can view the city, the Lima valley and the sea. On the top thre is the Santa Luzia Church. The ascent to the top can be made on foot, elevator or car. It is a space of rare beauty, with diversified vegetation, the celtic village (citânia) of Santa Luzia and the Tílias Park.
