In excavations carried out in this town were laid bare some cores with circular and rectangular constructions, floors, walls of rooms, walls, late-Romanesque and Ceramic grinding wheels of manual Mills, among other vestiges. It is also known as Castro da Cividade.

Although it is not possible to define with certainty the time of its construction, the Fountain features elements typical of the Baroque and its structure has side pilasters, three spouts and a curved pediment with the royal arms.

The Nossa Senhora da Apresentação church is from 1606, being placed, at this time, the baptistery. In the end of the XVII century, beginning of the XVIII century, the façade is decorated with two azulejos panels and the inside is all dressed with golden woodcarving, standing out a gothic virgin, in alabaster. It suffered repair works already in the XX century.

Built in 1323, presents the inside of a single nave covered by Mat ceiling and six altars. On the triumphal arch cut a cross of the order of Christ. In the side altars and the side altarpieces of gilt, end of the 17th century. In the epistle side is the Baptistry, with seventeenth-century stone font, and a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Piedade.

At the centre of the Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square (Campo Novo), there is a statue of D. Pedro V on a pedestal. It was placed at the Campo de Santa Ana (Central Avenue) in 1879 and moved to the Campo Grande around 1915. It is a reproduction of another statue existing at the Praça da Batalha, in Porto, a work of the sculptor Teixeira Lopes, father.

Marcelino Antonio da Silva Mesquita was born in Cartaxo, in 1856. Despite having a degree in medicine, was in the letters found its splendor. Died in 1919.
