The castle of Serpa is part of the historic centre. The fortification is 230 m above sea level and is an integral part of the walled structure of Serpa, built by d. Dinis.

This church has one only nave and it is preceded by an ample porch with a mudejar top, built in 1463 by orders of the Duke of Beja (Infant D. Fernardo) for the Xabregas abbots. During the kingdom of D. Manuel it has rebuilt. It stands out the flapped vault on the porch, the main chapel, the cloister and the chapter room. Attention should also be paid to the unusual configuration from the small cloister and the glazed tiles from the 17th century.

This military fortress already existed during the Roman Period, although there are no records concerning its destruction and reconstruction. The present fortress was built under the orders of D. Dinis and was composed by a powerful Castle and by a double towered wall. There still remain some important traces from the wall and one can point out the one which is topped by a large arcade from the aqueduct that is extended until a monumental Moorish waterwheel. Convent that denotes the Manueline, Mannerist and Baroque architectures. Its origin is Gothic, which shows with the Church subscribed to portal alfiz and triumphal arch. Is in the decoration that shows the Baroque, especially in painting the ceiling.

A Guadiana reviver area, to the north of Mértola, where th river becomes narrower and that is why the locals used to say that one could cross from one bank to the other "num pulo" (in a jump). It is also said that the wolves used that passage a lot. The rapids caused by that compression of the river banks from 25 to 3 metres, are one of the main features. The natural waterfalls are also frequent and the highest one is 15 metres tall. The access is by a dirt road.

O restaurante O Alentejano, situado no centro histórico de Serpa, está instalado num edifício do século XIX, decorado de forma sóbria e afável. A cozinha é predominantemente alentejana, e respeitando as tradições do receituário regional, oferece uma grande variedade de petiscos, como os ovos mexidos com espargos bravos e enchidos. Nos principais há que provar o arroz de perdiz, os pezinhos de porco de coentrada, o ensopado de borrego e as sopas de cação. O pão de rala é imperdível.

O restaurante típico Molhó Bico, em Serpa, está instalado numa antiga adega, apresentando uma decoração castiça e um ambiente simpático. Estamos num restaurante alentejano e a comida é genuína e farta. Numa clara aposta na gastronomia regional, imperam pratos como a parrilhada de porco preto, o cozido de grão, o ensopado de borrego e as açordas de bacalhau, pescada ou sardinha. Na altura da matança surge a surra burra (cachola à alentejana).
