The rocks of the Coastline from Oporto are the oldest which outcrop in Portugal and constitute a geological heritage of high scientific interest-didactic, the Metamorphic Complex of Foz do Douro, classified as Municipal Natural Heritage. In April 2005 was created a thematic route for dissemination of this designated heritage by "Geological Tour of Foz do Douro", signaled with nine panels of information addressed to the general public. With a privileged location, praia da Foz draw numerous vacationers. Include four beaches: Light, English, Ourigo and RAM.

In the beginning of the XX century began a remodelling of the landscape of the Frente Marítima (maritime front), which included the repair of the so called Estrada de Carreiros (at present Avenida de Montevideu). Such repair was concluded in 1914 and included, namely, the azulejos (tiles) covering of the concrete benches spread through the gardens. All this area has been the object of a recent urban intervention, which aims to revitalise this zone, that has always been a walking leisure place.

Placed at the Palácio de Cristal gardens, it is installed in a small granite tower, offering a dazzling view of the Douro sides.

The interpretive center of the Geological Tour of Foz do Douro, inaugurated on November 27, 2008, constitutes a space where there are complementary activities at field visits conducted in outdoor route, as the screening of a documentary on the Metamorphic Complex of Foz do Douro and experimental activities, primarily directed to the public schools. At the Museum of the ISEP are gathered scientific instruments, educational models and other objects that were belonging to the Institute over the years and to assist education units, constituting a collection that extends to almost all areas of engineering taught in this establishment: of physics to electronics, of mathematics to mechanics, chemical engineering civilian, through drawing and mineralogy.
