Percurso pela Margem Esquerda de Aveiro

At the João Mendonça Street, by the Central canal, you find three buildings with interpreting Arte Nova façades. Through this canal where, in ancient times, all the commerce of the city used to concentrate, now flow the coloured moliceiros boats that dazzle the tourists. At the angle formed by the Central and Pirâmides canals, is the Rossio: ample, garden-like, with palm-trees lined up and arte Nova details. At the intersection with the São Roque Canal and going through the Cais das Falcoeiras follow to the Cais dos Mercantéis and walk around the picturesque fishermen square, in preference in the beginning of the day, when the fish caught of the night is being sold at the Fish Market. In this area you can also visit the little chapel of São Gonçalinho, dated from the XVIII century, a match-maker saint in honour of whom the people of the city make a festivity every year. Arrived to the Central Canal you can cross the arcos Bridge to the right shore or go up the Lourenço Peixinho Avenue. On the top of this avenue is the Railway station, a beautiful building covered with glazed tile scenes, imitating some region motifs. We also advice the visit to the Carmo Church, on the street with the same name and to the Nossa Senhora da Alegria and Senhor das Barrocas Chapels, one of the most interesting monuments of Aveiro, where you can go by taking the Luís de Carvalho Street.
