Percurso pela Margem Direita de Aveiro

From the Luís Cipriano Square, by the Coimbra Street, enter the República Square,
framed by the buildings of the Town-Hall, dated from the XVIII century. The Aveiro city Arms are inscribed in the fronton, ended by a clock tower. The Aveirense Theatre (1947) and the most beautiful classical portico of the Misericórdia Church stand out. On top of a pedestal there is a representation of the great tribune José Estevão (1809 – 1862), at the oratory pose lent by the sculptor Simões de Almeida. Follow through the Combatentes da Grande Guerra (old Rua Direita), of interest for its buildings draft and for the connecting function it has in the Aveiro urban structure, till the Marquês de Pombal Square. Here stands out the Casa de Santa Zita, for its exceptional glazed tiles, the Carmelitas church and the Palacete dos Viscondes Almeidinha, rebuilt in the 40 decade, after a violent fire, being now the Governo Civil. The Aveiro Museum (At Santa Joana a Princesa) occupies part of the rooms of the Jesus Convent, where you can find pieces of exceptional interest, including the magnificent Infanta Princesa Joana Mausoleum. Further on, you’ll see the São Domingos Church, seat of the Aveiro diocese. To continue your walk, go to the Artur Ravara Avenue, where you will see the Infante Dom Pedro Park, a green, beauty spot with an artificial lake (you can rent pleasure-boats), visit the Caça e Pesca Museum or just take a walk In the Park’s surroundings is the Aveiro University, which buildings were planned by one of the most respected contemporaneous Portuguese architect.
