From Castro Marim to Cape St. Vicent: an Easter road trip in Algarve
Algarve has much more to offer than just its beaches in the Summer. All About Portugal gives you 10 reasons to travel there for Easter Holidays.
One of the most popular destinations in Portugal for Summer holidays, Algarve is known worldwide thanks to its beaches. However, don't forget to see another side of the region outside summer season and the "chaos" of its beaches. All About Portugal has drawn an Easter road trip, from one end to the other, in the south of Portugal, and challenges you to discover natural paradises of great beauty, which you can balance with extreme activities to relieve the stress of everyday life.
Starting Point: Castro Marim
The journey begins between the river and the sea, near the Spanish border. The village of Castro Marim echoes memories of other times, having been inhabited by different peoples, such as Greeks and Romans, before being conquered to the Moors in the 13th century. Visit the Castle, still today the most outstanding element in the village landscape, and discover the traditional salt flats, handicrafts and the influences that the nearby people left on the population.
Santa Luzia, the Octopus Capital
Stop in Santa Luzia, about half an hour away, in the neighbouring municipality of Tavira. The parish is of a singular beauty, marked by the fishing tradition of the population in that area. Known as the "Octopus Capital," fished in the immediate vicinity, it is the ideal destination for a lunch or dinner break. The bustle of morning fishing, by the way, is one of the few events that breaks the calm of the village, ideal for relaxation.
Boat trip to the Deserta Isle
Travel to Faro, but don't just stick to the urban side. Nearby you will find a true natural paradise, which you can explore on a walking tour. The Deserta Island has no buildings and is characterized, out of high season, for not being much sought after. Enjoy relaxing on a walk along the walkways and beaches, marked by silence and the blue of the sea. You must get there by boat or ferry, available all year round.
Dive into Zoomarine (or just watch)
If you want to spend some more lively moments too, you can enjoy the region's amusement parks. One of the most popular for a good family time is Zoomarine. You can watch the sea life and daily shows, dive with the dolphins or try other more practical activities. Keep in mind the space schedule and buy the ticket online, as it is cheaper and avoids queues.
Bathe in a Water Park
Among the extreme options, there is one that reigns on hotter days: going to a water park. If you dare not dive into the sea yet - do not be surprised if you see someone doing it however - one of the best alternatives is to go to Slide & Splash. The slides are the delight of kids and adults. Although there are several water parks in the Algarve, the truth is that many only open in May or June, so you should be aware of this if you visit the area around Easter.
Be impressed by Algar in Benagil
The beaches of Lagoa make holidaymakers fall in love, but there is much to discover even when the weather does not invite diving. In addition to the coastal walks, there is a natural treasure to explore near the Benagil Beach: the Algar (Pit Cave) of José Rodeira. It is a place of singular beauty and a rare geological phenomenon. The caves are invaded by the sea and sunlight, providing a space of almost magical contours that you will not resist photographing.
Delight in the fish in Portimão
The Algarve is a reference with regard to fresh fish, namely sardines, which usually start being sought after in May. However, there is a lot of supply all year round, and the quality of the fish gives international fame to many restaurants in the area. In the middle of the trip, stop at Portimão and enjoy a meal of fresh fish by the Marina. This is a dining experience you won't want to miss!
The beautiful Ponta da Piedade
For many, this is one of the most beautiful places in the Algarve: Ponta da Piedade is another natural resource that will enchant you in this itinerary. Its cliffs are of stunning beauty and, depending on the ferocity of the sea, you can take a boat trip in this paradise of Lagos. There are rock constructions for all tastes, from large arches to caves and isolated pillars. From the highest points, accessible by foot, you can appreciate the beauty of this peninsula in all its fullness.
Walk the Rota Vicentina
The Vicentina Route is the most sought after pedestrian route in the Algarve. There are routes for all tastes and resistances, from Santiago do Cacém, still in the Alentejo, to Cape St. Vincent, about 140 kilometres away. The Route takes advantage of the green spaces, proving to be a demanding but incredibly beautiful experience. If you lack the "courage", visit at least Cape St. Vincent in the far Southwest of mainland Portugal. It was from there that, centuries ago, the Portuguese Discoveries were propelled.
Regain energy in Serra de Monchique
Far from the sea, there is another natural space waiting for you: the Serra of Monchique. Cross the mountain by car or by bicycle, depending on your leg strength, and follow through the vegetation and the various populations that come your way. There are also buses that travel from the nearest cities. Besides enjoying nature, be sure to visit Caldas de Monchique, Picota and Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve.
