Discover the beaches of the Algarve Coast by bicycle
Leave the car behind, and get on your bike to discover the beaches of the Algarve and enjoy the scenic landscape around you.
One of the main showcases of Summer tourism in Portugal, Algarve is the perfect paradise for those who love beaches and nature. The sea is sought after by Portuguese and foreigners, and natural treasures invite you for a stroll when the heat is less intense. Dare to discover the Algarve Coast by bike, and indulge in the breathtaking landscapes and the climate that makes this region so special. All About Portugal has set the path and now you just have to pedal.
Monte Gordo Beach
Get on your bike, or rent one if you need to, and start pedalling in Monte Gordo, very close to the Spanish border. For several decades now, Monte Gordo Beach has become one of the most popular places on the Algarve Coast, which is why it is an essential part of this itinerary. Take a dip in the hottest waters of the country, and then stroll along the Marginal.
Cabanas de Tavira
Take the boat next to the Marginal of Tavira, having as destination the island of Cabanas, humble land of fishermen that has grown tremendously in recent decades. The aroma emanating from its restaurants will leave you tempted to try the exquisite meals of fish traditionally prepared and the 7 kilometre-long beach is the perfect place for a stroll after lunch, and for those who enjoy the more tranquil sandy beaches, as well as sailing and windsurfing enthusiasts.
Isle of Armona, Olhão
Return to dry land and get ready to pedal for about 30 kilometres, to Olhão, and then make the crossing to the island of Armona. With about 50 permanent residents, the island, inserted in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, is a tempting destination when temperatures rise. The fine white sands of the beach extend for a length of about nine kilometres, and the clear water is also very palatable.
Deserta Isle, Faro
We continue to bet on boat crossings, but believe us, it is well worth it. The Deserta Isle, accessible from Faro, is a true paradise away from the swarm of other beaches. Its Barreta Beach is one of the best preserved in the Algarve, ideal for spending long days on the beach, or a walk along the seafront and walkways. The hard part will be leaving and saying goodbye to this dreamy scenery.
Ancão Beach, Loulé
The bike ride between Faro and Loulé is incredibly beautiful, ending at Praia do Ancão, which combines nature and sea to perfection. On one side, we have the dunes and vegetation, on the other a never-ending ocean. Here we bid farewell to the Ria Formosa Natural Park, whose limits reach Manta Rota. It is often news in gossip magazines, since it is frequented by some famous personalities.
Marinha Beach, Lagoa
The journey continues, pedalling toward Lagos. It is about 40 kilometres to Marinha Beach, an idyllic spot in the middle of enormous rocks. Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, it is surrounded by cliffs, which offer you wonderful views of the surrounding area. To access the beach, you must descend a large staircase. But we promise, it is well worth it, considering the beach just below.
Algar de Benagil Beach
Speaking of natural beauty, Praia do Algar is one of the most incredible "secret" beaches on the Algarve Coast. When we speak of Algarve beaches (or beaches in general), one cannot fail to mention Benagil, due to its incredibly rare physiognomy. The Algar beach is located within a cave, and is only accessible by sea - choose a boat that stops at the beach or rent a kayak to reach it.
Dona Ana Beach, Lagos
Among the most wonderful postcards that the Algarve offers is the Dona Ana beach, in Lagos. Before descending the wooden stairs, stroll through the belvedere and delight in the panoramic views. The rock formations of Ponta da Piedade result in natural barrier against the strong winds, reason why the waters are usually calm. Those who enjoy diving will find a vast fauna and flora, the result of this tranquillity.
Salema Beach, Vila do Bispo
The final stretch of this tour is about 20 kilometres long. Along the way, you will be delighted by the breathtaking views between Lagos and Vila do Bispo, where we find the last stop of this route: Salema Beach. Still very much linked to the fishing life, Salema is an authentic destination, where the peace and serenity of the sea meets the intense rhythm of those who live off it. Take the opportunity to indulge in a delicious fish dish!
