In recent years, many artisanal bakeries and pastry shops have appeared in Porto (and not only), whose premise is: bread that is more natural, healthy, light and nutritious, but equally tasty and irresistible. More than just a fad, slow fermentation bread, made with mother dough, is a throwback to the past, as it does not use chemical leavening agents, based only on the best flours (preferably ground in stone), water and salt. The mother dough is nothing more than a natural yeast, which uses the leaven and bacteria naturally present in the cereals, resulting in a bread that is indisputably lighter for digestion, with a low glycemic index and functioning as a natural prebiotic. The importance of bread in the diet of the Portuguese is unquestionable, but many people stopped consuming industrial bread for health reasons. But in these artisan bakeries and pastry shops you can find healthier breads, such as spelled, cereal, carob, gluten-free bread… handmade for all tastes.
Fariña - A Badass Bakery!
Farinã was born in 2020, operating at the time with home deliveries, but its fast success made them open a stall at Mercado da Alegria, in Foz do Douro, and later a store near the famous Ribeira. Among its naturally-fermented breads, the irresistible focaccias (like ham, fig and goat cheese!), breads and brioches stand out, while the artisan bakery highlights the cinnamon rolls, brownies and brioche French toast.
Royale Pão Paixão
The name leaves no room for doubt, at Royale Pão Paixão, in the Boavista area, bread is a king, an authentic passion that, let's face it, is common to most Portuguese. In a modern and sophisticated space, but with a cozy and familiar atmosphere, day menus and Saturday brunch are also served. The breads, made with mother dough of the best flours, ground in stone millstones, together with the artisanal pastry products make up the irresistible showcase.
OH PA!daria
Opened in 2022, OH PA!daria is one of the most recent artisan bakeries and pastry shops in Porto. The shop is small and only works with take-away service, but here you can feel the love for slow-fermented bread and pastries, made with the best flours, “with hands and heart”. Be sure to try the focaccias, brioche bread, chocolate babka, cinnamon rolls and cheese bread.
Trindade - Pão Artesanal
At Trindade - Pão Artesanal each loaf takes three days to make, and only the best flour is used, ground in a stone millstone. They use wild yeasts and their motto is “Mother dough, time and love”. It only works on a take-away or home delivery basis, and orders must be placed in advance. In addition to the more traditional breads, the spelled bread and the trioche stand out.
Brites - Padaria & Pastelaria Artesanal
Opened in 2022, Brites is already a real phenomenon in the city. In addition to the slow fermentation bread, which varies between the more traditional and the “stuffed”, its fame is due to the excellence and originality of its artisanal pastry, with clear French influences. The pain au chocolat, the Berliners, the cruffins (a delicious cross between a croissant and a muffin), the French toasts and the "saturnos", everything is tempting!
Pão da Terra
Pão da Terra was one of the first artisan bakeries and patisseries in Porto, with its first store in the Municipal Market of Matosinhos and, later, with a second store in the Boavista area. Here, the bread takes only flour, water and salt, and the organic flours are ground in stone millstones. The space is spacious and modern, serving lunch and snack menus where the star, of course, is the bread and artisan bakery.
Masseira - Padaria Artesanal
At Masseira, all the bread is fermented with yeast dough and made with organic flour, grains and seeds. Its three pillars are: natural fermentation, flour and other ingredients from organic farming and stone grinding, an ancient practice that better preserves the nutritional value of cereals. It works with home deliveries or take-away, and you can check the daily menu and place your orders through the website. In addition to the bread, try the mini chocolate brioches!
PAO - Padaria Artesanal Orgânica
PAO - Padaria Artesanal Orgânica, located in the Foz do Porto area, serves real food, and aims to bring back the pleasure of simple things. And what is more simple and delicious than bread, made the old-fashioned way, with only organic flour, water and salt? In addition to buying their wonderful bread, you can taste, in the modern and cozy space, toasts or daily menus made with artisan preserves.
Ogi by Euskalduna
It was at the hands of the well-known chef Vasco Coelho Santos, from the Euskalduna restaurant, that Ogi by Euskalduna was born, a naturally fermented bakery and pastry shop. Bread, as a star product, is made with Portuguese cereals ground in stone, but pastries are not far behind. Be sure to try the olive oil brioche bread, the sesame buns, the danishes and the fruit brioches.
Madan - Pão Artesanal
