Arronches

Located in the upper Alentejo, the municipality of Arronches is part of the Portalegre district. Bathed by the Caia River, water plays a fundamental role in the region, especially in agriculture, the most important sector in the municipality. One of the most notable sets of cave paintings in the country can be found in the parish of Esperança. There are painting shelters in the Serra dos Louções and Serra da Cabaça. In the mid-1980s, the parish was nicknamed the Portuguese rupestrian capital. In the gastronomy, typically Alentejo, sausages, tomato and dogfish soups, “açordas”, potato crumbs with spare ribs, lamb stew, "presinha do alguidar", among other highly appreciated delicacies, are a must.
