Alcoutim
Alcoutim is inextricably linked to famous battles and military episodes, as the Restoration War in 1642. Situated in the northeast Algarve, and in a strategic position in view of the proximity of the border with Spain, the Guadiana river appears as the greatest natural wealth of the county. And it was on the banks of the river that once the clandestine trade, represented in the Estátua do Contrabandista (smuggler's statue) erected in the middle of the waterfront in honor of this way of life, was seen. Alcoutim still preserves numerous roots and traditions, such as the low and whitewashed houses, a testimony to the traditional algarvian architecture. With regard to its heritage, the highlight goes to the castle, which features a small museum with some worth knowing archaeological finds in its interior. Be sure to observe the Mural of Alcoutim, a beautiful tile panels set that narrates, through the pictures, the customs of the region. And when it comes to traditions, there is a great bustle during the five Festas de Alcoutim days, on the second Friday of September, in which music, fireworks and nautical activities in the Guadiana are not missing. In October, in the village of Martim Longo, the Feira da Perdiz, an event much sought after by connoisseurs of sport hunting, with craft shows and regional cuisine, is held. As for its gastronomy, Alcoutim cuisine is mainly based on pork, bread and olive oil. The migas (bread soups), soups, stews or açordas (bread stews) are highly appreciated delicacies in the region. And for sweetening the mouth, we suggest a visit to the Feira de Doces D’Avó during Easter, where you can enjoy the bolo de massa de pão (bread dough cake), the filhós (fried sweets) and also attend the knitting of folares (kind of sweet breads), azevias (fried pastries) and the painting of eggs. The craft is specially made of the traditional wool and linen articles, rattan and wicker baskets, as well as by the pottery works.
