Alcanena
Alcanena is a village of Santarém district, in the heart of the Ribatejo. The town has approximately 15 000 inhabitants spread over ten parishes. Most of the territory is part of Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, with natural landscapes, interesting caves and subterranean water courses. The first marks of human activity can be proved by Lapas da Galinha and Lapas da Marmota Neolithic traces, cavities near the headwaters of the river Alviela. As the name suggests, the origin of the village dates back to the Arab occupation. The county has only been created in 1914, after a detaching of the Torres Novas and Santarém parishes. The local gastronomy has Ribatejo and Serrana roots, like the cachola (dish made with blood and liver, among other ingredients), blood sausage, baits and sausages. In terms of pastries: almond cake, coscorões (fried sweets), cornbread and bolos podres (cake made with honey and cinnamon). In the handicrafts leather products, the famous Minde blankets, rag dolls and varied club-rush works are common.
