Penafiel
Penafiel is located in the Centre of the Douro Litoral, between the rivers Tâmega and Sousa. The archaeological remains attest to the distant settlements in the region, such as the Dolmen da Portela, the dolmen of Santa Marta, the Menhir of Luzim and Monte Mozinho (one of the largest forts in the Northwest Peninsular). The historic city centre has a granite set of noble houses, churches and convents that are worth a visit. In the municipality of Penafiel no shortage of historic-cultural monuments which should meet: the monastery of San Salvador de Paço de Sousa, the Coreixas Tower and the House and Honor of Barbosa. The manor-houses evoke history: the Casa do Murom was the place of refuge for the poet Alexandre Herculano, the Casa do Seixo, in Recesinhos, (the birthplace of poems by António Nobre) or Quinta da Aveleda (name of the wine production farm that labeled the wines Aveleda and Casal Garcia), are just a few examples. A special reference to the monuments that make up the route of the Romanesque of the Sousa Valley: the Benedictine monastery of Paço de Sousa (where is the tomb of Egas Moniz), the Church of s. Gens (Boelhe), the Church of Gândara (Cabeça Santa), the Church of S. Miguel de Entre-os-Rios (Eja), the tombs of the Church of S. Pedro de Abragão, the Memorial of the Hermitage (Irivo) and Espindo bridge (between Bustelo and Lodares/Lousada). The termas de São Vicente is a must-see: the properties of its waters were already recognized by the Romans. These spas have more sulphurous waters of Europe, which makes them a unique place for those who want to reconcile health and well-being. The typical dishes of Penafiel are the lamb or the lamb roast with rice, "cozido à portuguesa", fried or pickled shad, lamprey, dishes that must be accompanied with wine of the region. The "sopa seca", "sarrabulho doce and the "tortas de S. Martinho" are some of the traditional pastry which join the fair sweets: the "bolinhos de amor", the "pão-de-ló", the "pão podre", "rosquilhos", "brinquedos" or the "doces de S. Gonçalo". In linen garments, wool blankets and basketry represent the crafts of the region.
