It was once the Feira do Livro (bookseller's fair) and the Festas Sanjoaninas (Saint John’ popular festivities) this garden surrounded by trees is the ex libris of the Boavista area. At the centre rises the “Monumento de Homenagem aos heróis da Guerra Peninsular” (monument in honour of the peninsular war heroes), planned by the sculptor Alves de Sousa and the architect Marques da Silva. It is a huge granite column, 45 meters height, with a peninsular lion slaughtering a Napoleonic eagle on the top. This place is usually called Rotunda da Boavista.

It was the first public garden in the city, open in 1834. Its name comes from a former medieval leprosery demolished in the XVIII century. This is a romantic space crowded with fountains and statues, leafy trees and flower beds and also a small bandstand. The garden is the only one in the city that has a railing. It is visited habitually by students, since the Fine Arts Faculty and the Municipal Library are nearby.

In this beautiful large garden placed at the Foz do Douro, created at the end of the XIX century, the fountain and the two obelisks by Nasoni stand out. There is also a small lake with a sculpture in the centre representing a young lady with a seal, a sculpture in honour of the writer Raúl Brandão, a bandstand, and the public toilets, built in 1910, decorated with Art nouveau Azulejos (tile) and English china. At last, the place has a mini-golf pitch and a small cottage – esplanade called the Chalé Suíço.

Known in the Middle Ages as the Campo do Olival (olive grove), its name is due to the bishop’s ropery, who was installed there in the XV century. In 1611, the former Campo was converted into an Alameda (lane) and, in 1865, by the hand of the German Emile David, the garden was born. In the following century, and after the cyclone’s devastation in 1941, it was replanted.
