The wonderful historic centre of Valença is located inside the walls, from the old metal bridge to the landmark and several religious monuments, namely the Church if Colegiada of Saint Etêvão, the Church of Misericórdia and the Mother Church of Saint Maria dos Anjos. Valença firstly became important during the Middle Age as it was a passing point to the pilgrims heading for Santiago de Compostela. But it became known military wise. Located in Solar dos Aguillares, a stately building from the 12th and 14th centuries, this museum, born from Raul de Sá Correia's passion for everything that concerns his land, is a source of pride for Vila Flor and even the district for its collections of painting, archeology and ethnography, African crafts, sacred art, numismatics and medals. Its contents, a gift from Vilaflorenses over the years, are now the heritage of the local people, so that their "yesterday" remains alive, and future generations know that Vila Flor has a past that needs to be preserved.

When it was created, in 1945, it was called “Museu de Etnografia e História do Douro Litoral”. Since that time it is placed at the Plácio de São João Novo, dated from the XVIII century. This monument has been suffering a huge degradation, being, in 1989, under the guardianship of the IPPC and, in 1991, of the IPM. Closed to the public since 1992, the IPM has being transferring its collections to various museums. Works in the façade and the coverings of the palace have being made and, after the inventory systematization, the intension is to solve the problem definitively.
