Miranda do Douro

Church belonging to a Baroque convent, renovated and adapted to the Municipal Library, but keeping parts of the original structure. The convent was built by the Discalced Friars of the order of the Holy Trinity, with license of Dom João V. The Church was later built between 1718 and 1728, being the library here installed in 1999.

Miranda do Douro

Former Cathedral in Miranda do Douro, now serves as Miranda do Douro parish church. It was founded in 1552 by King João III, designed by Gonçaalo de Torralva and Miguel de Arruda. It is notable for being completely Mannerist in style: the facade with a Mannerist door, the towers with the bells, the altars, the altarpieces, the arched roof and the row of chairs. The sculptures on the altarpieces represent, among others, the Apostles and the Virgin in the middle of angels. It is worthy to mention the wooden piece of Jesus child of Cartolinha.

The primitive Castle remain a part of the Citadel, some panos of walls interrupted by cubelos and the door of Treason. The walls of the Castle are some entries, the door of the Senhora do Amparo, the False Door and the Wicket. Still standing, but badly damaged, is donjon.

Imposing religious monument, belonging to the convent of order of St. Francis (via dos capuchos). It consists of nave, chancel and Bell Tower. The interior conserves an important booty embodying: three Corbels with Christ crucified, flanked by the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist, the gilded and polychrome altarpieces, the side chapels and the chapel interior.

This is a religious monument composed by a nave divided in three ranks, main chapel, lateral chapels, sacristy and campanile tower. The main façade is composed by a round arch on the doorway and by a circular window sided by a campanile in which the superior one has a double bell ringer. There is, on this façade, one window with a view to the Via Sacra. On the inside stands out the baptistery where it is the baptismal font, the Mannerist niche, the painted panels on the main chapel and the altarpiece and the Christ the Redeemer on the Sacrarium …

A nucleus composed of figures engraved in granite representing two opposed bovids and a sequence of four cattle heads pointed toward the ground, and that are associated to the schematic paintings of prehistory. Certain traits add painted details not recorded, admitting the possibility of some of the elements being Paleolithic. Is a UNESCO World Heritage site (1998) and National Monument by IGESPAR, integrating the Archaeological Park of the Coa Valley.
