The name is due to the existence of large neolithic caves in the region, linked to several local legends. One should visit the mother church, rebuilt in the 16th century, with a tomb, pattern tiles on the nave and a polichrome stone carving, of the 15th century, and the medieval bridge. The local craftswork includes miniature wood objects.

After the Mondego, this is the second longest river entirely in Portugal. It starts on the Estrela mountain, at an approcimate altitude of 1900 m, and measures 242 km. The Nabão and the Alge, as well as the Isna, Paul, Bogas, Pêra and Unhais brooks are its main tributaries. It has its mouth in Constância. It is used for producing electricity.

Located on a foothil above the Zêzere river, eighteen kilometres away from the parish's siege, Pedrógão Pequeno is an old village with several roman vestiges. It was once the siege of the parish (charter given by Dom Manuel I in 1513) under the name of Pedógão do Crato. The parish was extinct in 1834 and became a part of Sertã. There are still vestiges of the pillory left (classed as a National Monument). The church, in the manuelin style and composed of two wide naves, dates back to the 17th century.
