Igreja de Santa Clara

The Santa Clara Church is all that’s left of the convent with the same name, whose construction was ordered by Dona Filipa de Lencastre. This real treasure with golden carving is hidden at the Square. It keeps its initial gothic structure, although it suffered changes through the XVII and XVIII centuries.

The present temple was built in 1776, starting to serve as the Parish church of Massarelos when Santa Maria da Boa Viagem church ruined. Palacete de Belomonte

The Belomonte Palacete (mansion) is also known as the Pacheco Pereira’s House. This small palace was built in the XVIII century and was one of the meeting points of the Porto’s high society. After the death of João Pacheco Pereira, the owner, the house starts to fall apart. In 1888 it is bought by the Iron Company. Later, it was a college and a bank.

Edifício do Teatro Nacional de São João

The São João Theatre was open in 1798, at the present Praça da Batalha. This theatre, which became the binding meeting point to the romantic generation, was destroyed by a fire in April, 1908. Nowadays, the Companhia Nacional do Teatro São João, totally rebuilt by Marques da Silva, is one of the main buildings in the city and stage for the most important cultural shows of the city.

The São Miguel-O-Anjo Tower is a building from the XV century. This Tower is placed in a rocks’ set and is a unique exemplar in the country. The aim of its construction was that it would work as a light alert to the navigation. Its inside is octagonal, with three wall hollows. The chapel is covered by an arched roof.

Forte de São João Baptista

Its construction began in the end of the XVI century, being concluded in the next century. In 1832-33, during the Porto siege, it served as a storing and protection spot. Fortification with defence elements placed at the angles and meant to protect it from flank attacks, with a big defensive capacity. In the beginning of the XIX century, an urban change covered the set with rocks, withdrawing the castle from the mouth.

Built at the Escura Street it was later transferred to the spot it at nowadays. It started by being dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção, whose festivity happens in August and of whom the tailors were especially devoted to. From this connection came out its popular name.
