Igreja e Convento de Santa Helena do Monte do Calvário

This convent was founded in 1570 by Infant D. Maria of Portugal. It should be mentioned the church with one only nave, covered with tiles from the XVIII century and the two floors cloister with rectangular plan and simple lines.

Fundado em 1452, o convento apresenta curiosas aplicações de tijolo na fachada e na torre sineira. Na igreja destacam-se os painéis de azulejos seiscentistas, um conjunto de pinturas murais, bastante danificadas, três retábulos de talha setecentista e frontais de seda bordada a ouro. O claustro, de dois pisos e em granito, tem no centro uma fonte de mármore.

The mediaeval city enclosure was defined by the towers and the walls from the 14th and 15th century. Presently there still exist the towers from some doors such as Avis, Baluarte and S. Bartolomeu, Public garden, Aqueduct, Rampa dos Colegiais, the ones close to Calvário Convent and the one located between the Alconchel and Raimundo doors and also the angle in front of the Malagueira road, the connection on the Fernandina Wall with the bulwark of Lippe Count and the wall next to the chivalry headquarters.

This palace in castle shape has manifested Italian influences in the main body, which is a 16th century construction from where an elegant Renaissance loggia stands out on the frontage and on the shed galleys on the back door. It also stands out the fifteen hundreds stonework, the horseshoe windows semi – detached (Mudéjar), the frescoes from Moorish inspiration, the fountain and fresh garden house, the cylindrical small towers, besides several other traces from Gothic structures. This convent was founded in 1485 as pantheon of d. Rodrigo Melo, the high usher of King d. Afonso v. is a specimen of the Gothic-Manueline architecture, of Arabic influence. On the façade is Gothic and neoclassical elements can be found. The monastery conserves the chapter room which features a mudejarismo Alentejo style.
