Integrating the municipalities of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Freixo de Espada-à-Cinta, Miranda do Douro and Mogadouro, the Douro Internacional Natural Park covers the 122 kilometers of border section of the Douro River and extends south, to the Douro Valley. From a very deep valley and two plateau areas (essentially granite), one to the North with altitudes of around 700-800 meters and the other to the South with altitudes of around 600-700 meters. A dam located in the international Douro, where the river starts its rather deep descent from the mesa. The access of boats to the water is quite difficult. The most common fish species are the barbel and the nase. Recreational activities are permitted, albeit with some restrictions.

The rocks of the Coastline from Oporto are the oldest which outcrop in Portugal and constitute a geological heritage of high scientific interest-didactic, the Metamorphic Complex of Foz do Douro, classified as Municipal Natural Heritage. In April 2005 was created a thematic route for dissemination of this designated heritage by "Geological Tour of Foz do Douro", signaled with nine panels of information addressed to the general public.
