Manueline temple with medieval defensive tower. The head, in Gothic style, has a crucible and twin windows. The temple and defensive tower form part of the conventual structure that belonged to the regular canons of San Agustín, from the XII to the XVI years, and from there to the Jesuits.

The main façade and the chancel are worth highlighting. Although the history of ecclesial space point to a medieval Foundation dating back to the 12th century, the Church of Cárquere is structurally a fusion of styles that reveal crucial periods in their development as the monastic space, now linked to the Canons, now to the Jesuits. According to legend, it was founded due to the miracle, attributed to our Lady of Cárquere at the request of Bishop Egas Moniz de Ribadouro, of healing of the legs of Dom Afonso Henriques.

This church is one of the most notable examples of Romanesque Portuguese, being your turriforme massif, an original element built in the manner of a portico. While the head preserves own capitals of the 12th century, the construction of the ship and of the portico should date from the 13th century. Inside the Church, next to the triumphal arch, kept traces of mural painting.
