Castelo de Sines

Sines

A medieval castle that was restored several times along the years. Of the primitive castle still remain the walls with battlements and turrets, the donjon with windows and the palace of the military commander. In the armory one can view interesting armour paintings, war trophies and the royal shield of Dom João V. The walls still have architectural visigothic elements.

Sines

This fortress, which constructions was ordered in 1603 by Filipe III, is located in the Ilha do Pessegueiro (Peach Tree Island), to the south of Porto Covo. During the Restauração War (Restoration War) it was attacked several times by the Castilla army and was severely damaged. At the end of the 17th century, during the reign of Dom Pedro II, a new fortress was constructed. It is currently in ruins.

It was here that on the age of 11 or 12, with three of his brothers, Vasco da Gama received the tonsure and became a member from Santiago Order. On the 18th century the medieval church, already too small for the quantity of prayers that wanted to attend the mess, had to be remodelled receiving its present aspect typical from the Joanine baroque.

A 16th century chapel that still has, in the main façade, a manuelin portal and stones with inscriptions. On both sides one can view the counterforts, ending in conical pinnacles, that support the dome that covers its only nave. The walls have 18th century tiles. It has only one nave and a high altar with star shaped domes that stand on corbels, manuelin elements on the locks, on the corbels and on the portal.
