Castelo de Paiva
Castelo de Paiva is situated in the Douro region, a river that makes these lands become fertile and make the farming become one of the main local activities. However, the industry has had a great increase in recent years. In terms of heritage, there are several megalithic monuments and also signs of the Roman presence in the municipality, like the Marmoiral de Boavista and the Pia dos Mouros (Moors Sink), a Spanish-Roman tomb. Originally called simply Paiva, it was only one century and a half ago that it was renamed Castelo de Paiva. Castelo due to the possible existence of a fort in the locality and Paiva corresponds to a river that converges with the Douro.
