Cabeceiras de Basto

Located between the mountains of Cabreira and do Marão, Cabeceiras de Basto is one of Minho's oldest and most historic counties. Taking advantage of the Tâmega and Bessa rivers proximity, the territory is fertile and abundant in water. Agriculture and pastoralism are naturally predominant economic activities. In fact, there are ancient stately homes throughout the region, many of which converted into accommodation for rural tourism. It is an heritage of a people forever linked to the location and to the traditional knowledge. The vast landscape and architectural heritage is well preserved, so the visit deserves to be long. You can start your visit at the imposing monastery of São Miguel de Refojos and the beautiful outdoor gardens. The statue of "Basto", representative of a Lusitanian warrior, and where the cabeceirenses review their courage and honesty, is another must-see attraction. For lovers of historic locomotives, it is suggested to visit the Railway Museum of Arco de Baúlhe. And if you enjoy the contact with nature, the Parque de Merendas de Moinhos de Rei picnic park offers the best of the local fauna and flora, where several mills built during the reign of D. Dinis are part of the landscape. When it comes to popular festivals and fairs, the Feira de São Miguel attracts all the attention. The event dates back to the Middle Ages and was magnified in the reign of Dom Dinis. This monumental and well-known popular party drags crowds and reaches a climax with the festival and procession on September 28th and 29th. The population loves well-served meals, so there are no respected restaurants missing where to enjoy the delights of the regional cuisine. The main highlight goes to the tender beef and the sausages. Accompany them with Minho's refreshing vinho verde. The honey produced in this region is renowned. Choose the typical honey cake for dessert.
