The scenery is set: there is a smell of sardines, popular music is already blasting in the decorated and colourful narrow streets of Lisbon, and everyone is in party mood. The time has come when Lisbon is the happiest: the "Santos Populares" season, with Santo António (Saint Anthony of Lisbon) being the most celebrated saint in the city. Throughout the month of June there are good reasons to go to the heart of the capital, imbued in a practically constant festive atmosphere, with "arraiais", popular balls and a lot of music and animation. All About Portugal has planned a one-night tour so that you can enjoy the "Santos Populares" to the fullest. On 12th June, the high point of the city's celebrations, you can also enjoy the Popular Parades on Avenida da Liberdade, or one of the lively "arraiais" nearby - let the music guide you.
Start at Cais do Sodré
Travel to Cais de Sodré by public transport to avoid traffic and enjoy the night without worry. Nearby you will find plenty of food and drink stands, so you can take a moment and charge batteries for the long walk ahead.
Climb to the "Arraial" of Santa Catarina
Pass the statue of the Duke of Terceira and go up Rua do Alecrim to Luís de Camões Square, then walk to your left. The Arraial of Santa Catarina, or Santos de Santa, is organized by the scouts of the neighbourhood with the purpose of raising funds. In addition to a dance floor, you can also eat Caldo Verde (green broth) and sardines, among others.
Enjoy the view over Lisbon and the Castle
Cross the popular Bairro Alto, with the necessary stops, towards the magnificent viewpoint of the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara. Get involved in the animation of the streets, enjoy the village you find along the way and end up with a dream view of the city of Lisbon and, in particular, the São Jorge Castle. Certainly one of the most Insta-worthy sites in this itinerary.
If it's on the 12th, see the Popular Parades
Go down to the usually busy Avenida da Liberdade. On the night of 12th June, the eve of Saint Anthony of Lisbon's Day, the heart of the city is invaded by the traditional Marchas Populares (Popular Parades), with Lisbon's neighbourhoods taking to the streets with elaborate numbers, lots of music and creativity. The party has only just begun, so the itinerary continues towards the Castle.
Continue in party mode at Arraial Composto
"We still want to have a planet in August" is the motto of the Arraial Composto, in Largo da Rosa, self-titled the most environmentally friendly "arraial" in Lisbon. The space is decorated with reused material, in an event that seeks, while entertaining, to raise awareness about environmental and sustainability causes.
Fall in love with the sights and the Arraial da Graça
Follow the warm, small streets of the historic centre, heading to Largo da Graça, for one of the capital's most traditional and popular "arraiais". The Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen viewpoint gives us an incredible view of the city, which can (and should) be accompanied by a sardine with bread.
Let the animation of Vila Berta infuse you
If you have not yet been overcome by tiredness, we suggest another walk to Vila Berta, where since 2010 the Popular Saints have contributed to revitalize the area. Here, the festivities do not last all month, but when they happen, they're a blast. And if you think that because it is recent it is less crowded, you might be wrong: Vila Berta is much sought-after by locals and tourists.
...and also the Alfama's
The return is, as could be expected, through Alfama, one of the most traditional neighbourhoods in Lisbon. On the 12th and 13th it is practically impassable, so even short distances will seem miles to you. Still, whether in the midst of confusion or another quieter night, be sure to visit the historic area, soaked in the genuine and tender soul of Lisbon. With a lot of dancing, of course.
Finish by the Tagus, in Terreiro do Paço
Everything ends, but before you go make a detour to Terreiro do Paço, with its privileged view of the Tagus River and the South Bank. Opt for a stroll along the river, or simply a moment of conviviality next to the Cais das Colunas. In this area you can then take the Metro or, if it is after 1 a.m., look for one of the early morning buses or other alternative transport.
