Fortaleza de Abrantes / Castelo de Abrantes
Castle situated on the right bank of the Tagus River, consisting of medieval fortifications and bastions. This castle has undergone profound changes and reconstructions over the centuries, particularly in the 17th and 19TH centuries. In the 17th century, Dom Afonso V, fearing an invasion of Spain, ordered the rebuilding of ancient fortifications. This fortress was considered the key to the defence of Borders and played an important role during the French invasions. Keep the keep and some cloths of wall with round turrets. Highlights the vaulted spaces with terrazzo. The Church of Santa Maria survived the various changes, saving the high altar encased the tiles.
