The church was completely rebuilt in the 16th century. The statues that decorate the interior rooms of the palace are from this period, as well as the monumental fountain, in Baroque style.

The medieval primitive building was rebuilt in the 18th century.

The fort was built mainly to defend this site and its people. People used to travel here from Alcantarilha (the capital of the parish) in order to fish and engage in other piscatorial activities and therefore needed some protection. A chapel dedicated to the fort's patron saint was built inside the fortress in 1972, nowadays it is known as Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos (Chapel of Our lady of the Distressed).

This tower is, in fact, a Clock tower; the popular designation calabash tower comes from the clay calabashes that served to amplify the bell sound. Although the mechanism of the clock has been modernized, this tower is set on the first generation of clock towers in Portugal. From the top of its 126 metres it is possible to see the urban net of Santarém and the fields surrounding it. Nowadays it shelters the Núcleo Museológico do Tempo.
