Located on the left bank of the Alva river, this small town stands on a hill surrounded by pine trees and cliffs. Its main economic activity is agriculture, namely cereals, wine and olive oil. With "castro" (a celtic village) roots, it was occupied by the goths and the romans and later peopled by the king Dom Afonso Henriques. Marialva is divided in three sections, the Devesa, that spreads along the planes, the town, medieval and of the 1500s, and the citadel, inside the walls, currently with no inhabitants.
