Castle of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, with quadrangular towers. The keep is on the hillside more phantasmic Shap. Medieval doors only if conserves of mercy, on the Guadiana river. The ancient Citadel, as well as important sections of the wall that surrounded the population, are still preserved. Archaeological work carried out in the Citadel of the Castle uncovered a Moorish quarter of centuries XII\/XIII, and various Roman structures of the 4th century. The Arab ceramic pieces found are exposed in the core of the Museum of Mértola.

In the northern slope of the Castle, the possible forum of the Roman city creates an artificial platform, support the imposing monumental Myrtilis City set. All this platform, flush with the wall, relied on a solid underground Gallery with about 30 feet long and 6 feet tall. In late Antiquity, 5th and 6th centuries, religious buildings were erected luxury here; among them, a possible Episcopal Palace and a baptistery, of which there are significant fragments of a beautiful set of multi-colored mosaics. This former mosque it was adapted to a Christian church on the 13th century with a manueline – mudejar façade where it stands out the crenels and the spires. It is the only one that stills conserves the volumetric and some decorative elements from the Arab temple that preceded it, namely the disposition in plan “T”, the “mihrab” presence, the “nimbar” compartment on the “quibla” wall (the mosque wall) turned to Meca, the still existing 5 naves from the former mosque, the statuary, doors and remains from the mirabe.

Ths ole temple of the Misericórdia de Mértola houses the first municipal religious art museum. This space, named Porta da Ribeira, presents a unique set of images and religious utensils from popular hermitages and chapels. It features religious art from the 14th to the 18th centuries, religious utensils, procesion crosses and painted wood.

Imposing defensive complex situated in a place of great scenic beauty. Most of the buildings of the castle dating back to 1226 and 1230. Was modified and enlarged in the 15th, 16th and 17th. In the reign of King Dinis built ramparts, walls and fortresses. The reconstruction remain the keep and some cloths of wall.
