This church has one only nave and it is preceded by an ample porch with a mudejar top, built in 1463 by orders of the Duke of Beja (Infant D. Fernardo) for the Xabregas abbots. During the kingdom of D. Manuel it has rebuilt. It stands out the flapped vault on the porch, the main chapel, the cloister and the chapter room. Attention should also be paid to the unusual configuration from the small cloister and the glazed tiles from the 17th century.

This military fortress already existed during the Roman Period, although there are no records concerning its destruction and reconstruction. The present fortress was built under the orders of D. Dinis and was composed by a powerful Castle and by a double towered wall. There still remain some important traces from the wall and one can point out the one which is topped by a large arcade from the aqueduct that is extended until a monumental Moorish waterwheel.
