Passo da Rua da Ancha

Built by António Nobre in 1675, it portraits one of the episodes of Christ’s Passion, from its condemnation until his death at Calvary. This “Steps” or small chapels were a place of cult for Catholics doing the Via Sacra, nine “Steps”, as a symbol of Jesus suffering.

The pillory construction was ordered by Dom Manuel after the grant of the charter of Leitura Nova in 1521. Similar to other royal works of this time, here are also represented the arms of this monarch, armillary sphere and an iron Christ cross. After a troubled way, the pillory was rebuilt in the XX century accordingly to the original model.

Huge building that marks the urban net. The construction of this college began in the XVII century but with the expulsion of the Jesuit Order from Portugal, in 1759, it was interrupted. In 1770, by order of King Dom José, the bishopric of Beja was reinstalled there. In 1777 the works restarted and nowadays it is the quarters of Guarda Nacional Republicana and a part of the Universidade Moderna.
