Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Ó de Águas Santas

This church was the temple of the Monks of the São José de Jerusalém brotherhood, having been later given to the Religious Order of Malta. Later on, it underwent several remodelling works, presenting a façade crowned with a bell tower and a portal flanked by four pairs of columns, with golden chapiters. There’s another portal at the north façade where the Malta Cross is carved.

The primitive monastery dates from the middle of the 9th century. The reconstruction of the new church began in the 16th century and was finished in the 18th century. The granite façade shows some austerity and the church presents a single nave, with a circumscribed transept, a rectangular main chapel and bell towers. Inside the main altar stands out, as well as the two cross altars, built later, the high choir and the ceiling in vault. Santuário Mariano de Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho

Igreja construída em 1738, em estilo barroco, de planta longitudinal, nave única e capela-mor retangular. O interior é decorado com talha dourada, retábulos e caixotões barrocos, possui uma cruz de Malta e um vitral em honra de Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho. Merece destaque o revestimento da fachada principal, todo em azulejo. Em 2003, foi declarado Santuário Mariano por decreto do Bispo do Porto, D. Armindo Lopes Coelho, altura em que a Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho foi coroada como Padroeira de todo o concelho. A festa em sua honra celebra-se no segundo domingo de Julho, feriado municipal.

This is an ancient recreational farm of the bishops of Oporto. It is composed of a beautiful house, with a ground floor and a noble floor, and nine windows with granite balconies of bolsters. Inside are worthy of notice the chapel with a golden woodcarver retable from the 17th century. Here you may also find the “Maia Gardens”, fountains, chapels and a swimming-pool. The statues and the outside areas are by Nicolau Nasoni.

This chapel, dated from the 18th century, was raised on a granite monticule with a spiral ramp and traditional Portuguese pavement. Here died, in 1038, Dom Gonçalo Trastamires. A procession in honour of Saint Ovídio takes place every ear on the last Sunday of August, at the belvedere over the small town of Castelo da Maia.
