It was built between the 17TH century and the 18TH century by the Marquis of Graciosa and alcaide-mor of Monsanto, Fernando Afonso de Melo Sampaio Pereira Geraldes. In the 20th century was acquired by the City Council which, after the restore, installed here the tourist office.

This pillory done by Estevão Simões and Domingos Fernandes is composed by a capital with two escutcheons, one has the national Coat of Arms the other has five fleur-de-lis and a cockade among the volutes. The cylindrical piece is crowned by a conic piece which has in the top an iron weather vane.

This fortress remains only a section of the wall, of irregular outline, annex to the downstairs door. Highlight that the downstairs door, with its bow, is one of the entrances to the village, and is practically the only remnant of the ancient wall, built by Dom João IV.
