Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo

13th-century building, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. It maintains the Gothic structure and portal. In the main chapel is the tomb of the seven Knights of the Order of Santiago killed by the Moors in an ambush, which legend associates with the conquest of the city. From the collection of sacred art, comprising pieces of goldwork from the 16th and 18th centuries and vestments, a missal stand from the 16th / 17th centuries, from Japan (“nambam” art) deserves special mention.

The bases of the defensive system were built between the 8th and 13th centuries, during Muslim rule. The primitive Moorish fortification later underwent improvement works after the Christian Reconquest, ordered by King Dom Dinis. Currently, you can still see some parts of the wall, the Arco da Misericórdia and a part of the Alcáçova that maintains its medieval characteristics. Inside the walls, the beautiful garden stands out.

At the main chapel stands out the rococo carved retable, semicircular vault with perspective painted wood ceiling, representing Nossa Senhora do Carmo and a set of four paintings from José Rasquinho, representing the life of Santo Elias. At the Convent stands out the main façade, with three bodies, three panes delimited by pilasters, angles and ashlar mansonry cyma, with three interspaces for each floor.
