A village located on a plateau at 770 meters above sea level, on the right bank of the Coa River, Freineda was very important during the Napoleonic invasions. In fact, the headquarters of Wellington still exists today in the form of a baroque manor house, built in front of the main church. We suggest you to take a look at the fountains and cruises. Crafts are dominated by Arraiolos rugs, while the cuisine is characterized by roast kid and hare rice.

The village, with origins in an old hillfort occupied by the Romans, seen from afar is an authentic fortress, surrounded by a wall and two turrets at the entrance. However, Castelo Mendo is, nowadays, practically doomed to abandonment. Its population, which barely exceeds one hundred and a half inhabitants, is dedicated to livestock and agriculture. However, if today the village's location (800 meters above sea level) is an obstacle to growth, in the past this would have been the crucial factor in its development and guarantee of the defense of the lands on the left bank of the Coa River. …

Castelo Bom was conquered from the Leonese by D. Dinis, highlighting the defensive role that the wall played during the Middle Ages. In fact, from the castle and fence (reinforced in the Manueline period) still exist a broken arched door and a small ruined tower (classified as a National Monument). Next to the fortification are two 16th century houses and another one next to the mother church. The typical gastronomy includes sausages, roast kid, river fish and pumpkin jam filled with almonds. Embroidery and lace are also typical works of Castelo Bom.

This small town includes the urban area and the walls area, on a plane area above the Côa river, at about an altitude of 750 metres. Shaped like a regular polygon, the walls, strongholds, gates, army houses and pits are a most important fortress, built between the 17th and 18th centuries. Buildings of interest: the castle, the church of Misericórdia, the horse riding area and the hospital.

Linked to the shepherds, Malhada Sorda is located on the right bank of the Côa River, in the Council of Almeida. Its origins date back to the paleolithic (as seen in the "pedra d'anta", near Carril), this village was oncee served by the roman road that linked Guarda and Salamanca. The traditional Portuguese architecture is combined with baroque buildings. Besides the "pedra d'anta" and th roman road, one should visit the mother church, the convent of the friars of Saint Augustine and the railway bridge.The high areas of the Côa valley are also pleasant.
