Castelo de Ouguela

Castle rebuilt by King Denis in 1310, undergoing restoration in the 18th century. The former fortification, situated high on a hill stands just a few pieces of wall and turrets, in addition to the seventeenth century fortifications, with cliffs, parapets and ravelins, built during the war of restoration. Highlights include the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça, gabled façade, framed straight Dick portal and oculus. This castle is a characteristic example of border strongholds of the lowland regions, with bastions system determined by artillery pirobalística.

This monument was built between 1570 and 1646 and it possesses a main façade divided in three parts by incorporated pilasters. The central part presents a large round arch which forms a narthex outdone by three windows with three pediments. In the lateral parts it is possible to see two strong bell towers covered with domes. On the inside, in three naves, it stands out the silver adornments and weaved and embroidered adornments in gold from the 16th century.

Built in the year 1766 the capela dos ossos, also called the Chapel of souls, is annexed to the Church. The interior decoration includes human bones, a tribute to the dead in the catastrophe of 1732, who claimed 2\/3 of the population of the village.
