It is one of the biggest and most beautiful Monuments from the Gothic architecture in Portugal and the first from Manueline art in the 16th century. Batalha Monastery is also the most outstanding symbol from the Avis dynasty. The monastery was built by orders of D. João I as a consequence from a promise he made to the Virgin Mary in order to win the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. This temple was constructed in 1512 and it underwent several reforms during the 18th century. The original mannerist outline is lively by the baroque combination on the façade from the 18th century and by the adding of some revivalist details from the following century. It also stands out the holly water font in Manueline style.

Church composed by rectangular nave and several dependencies, including the Dispatch room. The main facade is gabled and angular corners finished with pinnacles, is torn by portal surmounted by window balaustrado with pediment stopped to receive the national shield. Inside the nave and chancel are covered by the same high wooden ceiling in three planes, with the Johannine shield painted.

The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Fetal is composed by a small church and a cemetery, both built on the 16th century. Here is where the Holly Spirit festivity takes place, based on the story of a child that shepherded the cattle and begged for bread to survive. Hence, in this festivity everybody receives bread, sponsored by the “emperor”, someone that made a promise and as a consequence has to bear all the expenses.

This is a Manueline, Baroque and Revivalist church which was built in 1514. It is composed by a main chapel and by an attached sacristy. The two altars and the baptismal font are coming from the Monastery church.
