Located in the historic area of this small town, the museum has two parts. This museum is located in the old hospital of Aljezur's Misericórdia, that dates back to the late 18th century and was later turned into a Elders Home. At a later time, the Home changed and the space has been occupied by the Religious Art Museum since 2000. It contains objects from Aljezur's Misericórdia, from the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Alva, some offers and acquisitions.
The Casa Museu Pintor José Cercas is located in the historical centre of Alzejur. The painter donated his house and artistic spoil to the city hall on the condition that the municipality would create a museum-house with his name and where his artistic legacy would be on permanent exhibit. Besides José Cercas’ paintings and drawings, the visitor can also see glazed pottery, sculptures, religious art and valuable furniture from several periods. There is a small garden on the property where visitors can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view.
